Mark Uyl retired from active umpiring following the 2018 season after 20 years as a college baseball umpire.  Mark brings over 25 years of collegiate, amateur, and international umpiring and officiating-related administrative experience to his role as CBUA Managing Director.

As an active college baseball umpire, Mr. Uyl worked numerous conference tournaments, multiple NCAA Division I Regionals and Super Regionals, and made two College World Series appearances in 2014 and 2017.  Mr. Uyl was the lone American umpire that worked the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Mark also officiated college football for 12 years with several NCAA postseason assignments, and serves as coordinator of football officials for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (NCAA Division III).

Additionally, Mr. Uyl served on the board of directors of the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) from 2012-15 and as its chairperson during his final year. Currently, he serves as the high school representative on the Officiating Development Alliance (ODA), which consists of the supervisors of officials for the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, CFL, MLS and NCAA Division I sports.

Mark is a respected clinician and has taught officiating across the United States.  He has lectured in officiating courses at several colleges and universities and is a highly-sought after speaker and presenter.

In May of 2018, Mr. Uyl was named the Executive Director of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).  He is serving as the fifth full-time executive in the MHSAA’s 94-year history.  He first joined the staff of the MHSAA as Assistant Director in 2004, and coordinated the Association’s nearly 10,000 officials in addition to administering numerous sports and coordinating the MHSAA’s catastrophic and concussion care insurance programs over those 14 years. Prior to joining the MHSAA staff, he worked as a high school teacher, varsity football coach and athletic administrator at two large high schools in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area.

Mr. Uyl graduated from Caledonia High School in 1992 and from Calvin College in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in history.  He later received a master’s in educational leadership from Grand Valley State University.  At Calvin, Uyl was a four-year starter on the baseball team, earning all-conference honors twice and serving as team captain.

Mr. Uyl resides in DeWitt with his wife Marcy, an accomplished educator and coach who has served as a high school varsity basketball coach since 1994. They have three children:  Jackson, Grant and Madison.
